With the 1.3-l diesel engine, Volkswagen has developed an independent diesel engine based on the 1.3-l/40 kW spark-ignition (petrol) engine introduced in 1985.
This engine rounds out the diesel engine range at the lower end. It is tailor-made for the Polo model series. Beyond economic considerations, vehicles with diesel engines have gained further importance within the context of the environmental discussion. This is especially true for vehicles in the Polo class; almost all competitors in this segment offer a model variant with a larger-displacement diesel engine. With this engine, Volkswagen regained a competitive advantage.
