The 5-speed manual transmission 020 is fitted as standard in combination with the 81 kW engine in the Golf and Scirocco from model year 1980 onwards. In this version, only the gearing of 1st gear has been retained. The gear ratios for 2nd to 4th gears are designed such that the power gaps that occur during shifting are smaller… The 5th gear is slightly higher-geared than the previous 4th gear.
The advantages of the improved gear spacing are:
- even better acceleration
- slightly higher average speeds — and fuel savings.
