SSP 221 – Electronic Manual Gearbox

The Lupo 3L – Achieving 3 L/100 km

Based on the Lupo, Volkswagen developed the world’s first 3-litre car, now ready for volume production.

Designing a vehicle capable of covering 100 km on just 3 litres of fuel required meticulous attention to detail. Factors affecting fuel consumption—such as aerodynamics, rolling resistance, engine concept, gearbox tuning, and kerb weight—were systematically revised.

The goal was achieved through the use of new technologies, lightweight materials, and advanced production processes.

The driver also plays an important role in fuel economy, although many are unaware of this.

The electronic manual gearbox helps optimize fuel consumption by eliminating gear shift errors. Shifts are executed automatically to achieve maximum efficiency. Compared to a traditional automatic gearbox, the electronic manual gearbox offers lower weight and higher efficiency.
