SSP 146 – Golf Ecomatic

The Golf Ecomatic is Volkswagen’s environmentally friendly diesel concept.
The basic idea behind this vehicle concept is simple:
“Where no combustion occurs, no emissions are produced.”
To further reduce pollutant emissions in light of growing environmental concerns, the engine is automatically shut off during coasting (engine overrun) and idling using electronic control.
In this mode, the Golf Ecomatic glides through city traffic without emissions or engine noise, resulting in:
Approximately halved emissions of smog-causing pollutants
Reduced noise due to engine shutdown
Significantly lower CO₂ emissions, reducing the environmental impact for future generations
