SSP 068 – Scirocco GTX 16 V

INDEX

The Scirocco GTX 16 V is the first Volkswagen model to be equipped with an exclusive powerplant. This new fuel-injected engine has a 1.8 L displacement, is equipped with 16 valves, and produces 102 kW (139 hp).

Why 16 valves? If the performance of an engine is to be increased with the same displacement, one can increase the RPM and compression or use forced induction. However, there are limits set by technology or combustion processes.

Another possibility for increasing the power of a naturally aspirated engine is to improve the gas exchange. This means the engine must be enabled to intake as much fresh gas as possible. During valve overlap, no exhaust gas should be “re-inhaled.” This gas exchange is improved by approximately 30% through the arrangement of 16 valves, and the power is increased accordingly.

However, the entire intake air system—such as the air filter, fuel distributor, plenum chamber, and the tuned intake runners for the individual cylinders—must be integrated into this gas exchange process.

The chassis was also revised in accordance with the engine power provided. As a result, the Scirocco GTX 16 V meets the high demands placed on a sports coupé without losing its everyday practicality and driving safety.
