The 5-speed manual transmission 016 in the Audi 100 is designed to improve driving comfort and fuel efficiency (Economy Transmission).
Gears 1 through 4 correspond to the previous 4-speed manual transmission. Only the 5th gear has a higher gear ratio (overdrive/economy gear). As a result, the engine RPM is significantly reduced relative to the vehicle’s speed.
This leads to:
Lower fuel consumption
Reduction of interior noise
Improved (more favorable) exhaust emission levels
Reduced wear on engine components
